Writing and snot

January 6, 2010 by Esri Rose

Writing:  Turns out there’s already been a “Scottish Nostradamus.” Who knew?!

Snot: Got a full night’s sleep last night, probably thanks to the Mucinex I took. I’d use that drug more except I don’t understand it. How can it be both an expectorant and a cough suppressant? Still, I think I’ll buy some more today. Stuff I’ll be taking today to handle sinus infection/bronchitis/general allergies: Zyrtec, Augmentin, Prednisone, Singulaire, Albuterol, Chloraseptic, and the usual vitamins and herbal teas. If it weren’t for western medicine, I’d prolly be dead.

Working on new series.

Doesn’t have Elves, sorry. But I thought I should put the same updates on here that I put on FB and She Writes, just to get some new content up.

Got bio and synopsis of first mystery out to agent yesterday. She is shopping it around now. Now I’m doing research on the Scottish Nostradamus and SETI. This is the fun part. That, and writing the last 30 pages. I’ve got a ways to go before that.

I’m at AuthorFest of the Rockies!

October 1, 2009 by Esri Rose

It’s my second time at AuthorFest, and it is so much fun! The organizers do a stellar job, the town of Manitou Springs, Colorado is a GEM, and proceeds go to their library, which is one of the few Carnegie-founded libraries that’s still a library. Also, they have a patron book-widget called an ELF, so I’m all over that.

At 9:30 am on Saturday, I’ll be giving my workshop, High-Concept: Built-in Marketing for Your Books. Basically, a high-concept is one that is intriguing, appeals to a lot of people, and can be quickly and easily understood. “In a world where everyone can only tell the truth… …this guy can lie.” That’s the log-line for the movie, The Invention of Lying, a very high-concept film. Non-fiction can be high-concept as well. The Tipping Point, Chicken Soup for the Soul, Bonk. Mass appeal, clever idea, and a pithy idea for you to sell to your agent, your agent to sell to a publisher, and your publisher to sell to readers. High concept! (You’re soaking in it.)

Funny hair

Taken before bed last night. Musette is already in her bed, over on the left.

Noooooooo!

Do you see it? Dark rings around the eyes, big blonde hair, and a glittery jacket with…(shudder) shoulder pads. The 80s are back! Run for your lives!

It’s not a bad look, except for those damn pads. Pads have no place in a woman’s wardrobe, unless she’s going to bleed on them.

I also took a look at a recent Vogue magazine while getting my hair cut. The article in the back, where they get away from couture and into stuff people in “the midwest” are supposed to wear showed a gal in a little cotton top and shorts, and said something like, “Faded florals and ticking stripes for under $500. We’re charmed!” In this economy, I’m surprised the editor isn’t being burned in effigy.

The band’s history. Ah, the road to “overnight” mainstream success. The performance below BLEW ME AWAY.

It’s time for…Bavarian ox racing!

Updatey-poo

I’ve been on FaceBook a lot, instead of blogging. Here’s a round-up of news.

1) My cut finger has healed up really well. I had Angel Joe take the stitches out at six days. They were burning like fire. Turns out some people have a reaction to certain types of sutures. Did you know some suture materials include chromium and salt? I know! It’s like finding out Campbell’s Soup has MSG — another comforting thing shot to hell. In my case, the suture areas were so irritated that they are now peeling, which means I will probably avoid the zipper/railroad tracks scar. Woot!

2) Nasal Irrigation is da bomb. Yes, I said it. Squirting an isotonic salt solution up my nose has turned out to be great for my sinus/allergy probs, and might even let me avoid sinus surgery. HOWEVER, I still have problems smelling things more often than not, and am now thinking that if I got the surgery (general anesthetic = scary!) and had a clean slate, nasally speaking, the irrigation might keep me from regrowing polyps, etc.

3) Angel Joe and I have drunk the Dr. Horrible Kool-Aid. Also the Kool-Aid of The IT Crowd and The Big Bang Theory. Geeks rule! (Albeit geekily.) All available on Netflix.

4) As of TODAY, I’m lusting after a new computer. An HP dv3-2155mx. It is one screamin’ fast machine, with a built-in webcam and mic (don’t currently have those). Pus, the scrolling dragon design across the case and silver touch pad makes me drool.
